Automatic Number Identification is a telecom system that provides caller’s identification by phone number used to call the call center, in most cases, for payment purposes.
Automatic Number Identification is an essential system to provide quality customer service and identificate clients at the early beginning of a conversation. Automatic Number Indentification helps to understand such vital characteristics of a caller as language to use, location of a caller, previous interactions with the caller (if the phone number is included in internal databases, such as CRM software). In some cases, even if the phone number isn’t mentioned in any internal database, the system can provide a name of a customer which is linked with the phone number, but basic Automatic Number Identifiation systems don’t provide this feature.
These terms generally refer to the ability of a telecommunication system to identify and transmit the calling party’s telephone number to the receiving end, either to the called party or to an intermediate system like a call center or a private branch exchange (PBX).
ANI works by utilizing the signaling capabilities of modern telephone networks. When a call is placed, the caller’s telephone number is digitally encoded and transmitted alongside the call. This information is then decoded and displayed at the receiving end.
ANI offers several advantages, including:
ANI is widely available for landline and VoIP calls, but its functionality may be limited or unavailable for certain types of mobile or internet-based calls. Additionally, some callers may choose to block or withhold their number, preventing ANI from working.
While both ANI and Caller ID display the caller’s number, ANI is a more comprehensive technology integrated into the telephone network infrastructure. Caller ID, on the other hand, is a separate service that relies on the ANI information being transmitted to the end-user’s device.
Like any technology that involves the transmission of personal information, there are potential privacy concerns with ANI. However, strict regulations and industry standards are in place to ensure the secure handling and appropriate use of ANI data.
